Digital holography
PHI AB has developed a electronic circuit for the calculation of digital holograms.
1. There is a problem making cellular analysis on transparent cells.
2. One solution on making the cell more visible is by colouring it, unfortunately this will kill the cell sample.
3. A less hazardous method is to measure the phase displacement of laser light passing through the cell.
4. The result is a digital hologram where the variation in the phase displacement can be given dedicated colours. Unfortunately, the method claims vast amounts of image calculations.
5. The newly developed circuit is specially designed to calculate digital holograms at 25 frames per second (video frequency) – which provides a three dimensional cellular analysis with moving pictures in real time.

Material: Interview over the phone with a contact person at the company.
Tools: Illustrator to define the outlines. After that the work was moved to Photoshop for colouring, structures and shadows.
